Tax season is here, and it's time to file your federal income taxes for the past year. Navigating the tax forms and figures can be overwhelming, and straight confusing. Fortunately, there are free resources available through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. With the IRS having started to accept 2023 tax filings since January 29, and the deadline on April 15th looming, it’s essential to get started now.
The IRS.gov website offers a Free File program in partnership with various tax filing companies for individuals who:
Earn an Adjusted Gross Income (AIG) of $64,000 or less
Have a disability
Require language support
Are 60 years or older
Additionally, free tax preparation services and in-person support for accurate math calculations, and questions are available at locations nationwide.
To find assistance:
1. Visit IRS.GOV and navigate to "Online tools and resources."
2. Click on "Free Tax Preparation Help."
3. Scroll to “Find a VITA or TCE Site Near You” and use the VITA/TCE Locator Tool.
4. Enter your zip code and adjust the search radius as needed.
By expanding your search radius, you can access a broader range of locations for assistance. To avoid the rush, contact the locations in advance to check for walk-in availability or to schedule an appointment. Don’t wait until the last minute to tackle your taxes!
